I don't know what happened but I've become completely enamored with the Sookie Stackhouse books after writing a paper on the "True Blood" tv show. I only half enjoyed the show and on a whim started reading the books. But once I got to book 2, I was hooked! It reminds me of the black comedy abundant in everyday Southern life, the rampant hypocrisy and superstition. Plus, it has a touch of horror which I've always loved. Oh and reading about hot vamps is okay too.
As for the tv show, first season is a'ight. But second season is 10 times better, altho I could do with less orgies and bleeding heart casseroles. Thus, I'm all in for season three. But I think it's really because of Lafayette that kept my interest piqued. After watching the latest "True Blood" minisode, he's definitely the most enjoyable character (after that is the hot as hell Eric played by Alexander Skarsgard).
In this minisode, Tara gets downright nasty with Sookie, which is fun cos when isn't a verbal catfight not entertaining (see all ANTM cycles). But it's Lafayette coming in to tell them what's what (basically they're trippin'), a smile is brought to my face. On the downside, Anna Paquin, bless her heart, tries to do that southern accent thing but fails miserably. I frown every time I hear it before realizing there's nothing to be done.
Check out the mini-ep below and see for yourself.

Ray Bradbury at Acres of Books
My favorite author, Ray Bradbury, visited the Long Beach bookstore Acres of books this week. He quickly proved to the lucky visitors that he was still as sharp as ever.

A quote from the event:
“My life is centered with books.” “I find ME in this bookstore” “This is why I’m here, this is MY home.”
Ah, if only I could find a hot boy who feels as passionate about books as Mr. Bradbury.

Harry Potter Lexicon
Doesn't JK Rowling have enough money?

What's the big deal if this weepy guy wants to publish a reference book? His website was made out an earnest love for the books it seems.
I love those books, but sheesh are they confusing! I think there's enough harry potter money for them to share. Golden Compass has reference books, and you don't see Pullman throwing a fit. JK, you should just chill out and let your billions of dollars comfort you.

Rowling's expensive Fairy Tales
J.K. Rowling is now even more ridiculously wealthy. Her handwritten and illustrated book of fairy tales just sold for $4 million bucks! Holy hell!

I love Harry Potter and shit but damn is that a bit inflated. They had expected to only get 100K, guess they severely underestimated Pottermaniacs. Actually, it was Amazon.com who took the prize off Sotheby's hands. They plan to tour the book around libraries, which I suppose is slightly admirable. Now regular folks might take a peek at it, instead of it collecting dust in some fanatic's house.

Goodbye, old friend
I can remember every single Vonnegut book I've read in detail. The man was that good. I spent an entire summer at college just voraciously reading his entire library. I think it was his dark humor that kept me wanting more.
"Vonnegut died on Wednesday after suffering brain injuries following a fall weeks ago, said Donald Farber, Vonnegut's friend, lawyer, agent and manager." [Reuters]
The man was a legend. My favorites were Cat's Cradle, Galapogos, and Timequake.

The "Deathly Hallows" are approaching
The new Harry Potter cover has finally been set loose on the internets. And as a faithful follower of the series (and fantasy book nut), I wanted to post it on my blog.

I am psyched about it actually being released this year (July 21). But I'm not so obsessed as to have already pre-ordered it or anything. As soon as the release date was announced, Borders tried to email me (i.e. swindle me) into pre-ordering it with them a full 6 months in advance! It's a freakin' children's book. I will probably order it from Amazon before even dreaming of going inside an actual bookstore to get. The freaks will already be foaming at the mouth since the 5th movie comes out a few weeks before.
Now, that movie sounds great. It's the darkest one yet. Major characters die and shit. I am curious to see how they condense the longest book of the series into a 2 hour film.

Stories of Suicide

If you haven't, you should really buy Nick Hornby's new book. A Long Way Down is the humorous interweaving of four people's story after failing to commit suicide. They all run into each other by accident on top a building, known for suicides called Topper's House. It's New Year's Eve and apparently a busy time for suicides. It's really not as depressing as it sounds. It's truly inventive by doing first-person narratives from all four characters. Hornby really grasps the voices of his gang of depressives.
I personally found Jess, the 19-year-old who has nothing better to do than kill herself. She is basically out of her mind and sees suicide as a "why not" phenomenon. The others are only slightly more maladjusted. The book follows the events, in each of his/hers own words, of why they want to top themselves. They all do have pretty good reasons, but the book really focuses on how they figure out what to do afterwards. They've got to think it out now that they didn't follow through with their plans. Hilarity ensues when these random people try to understand the one thing they have in common: they hate their lives.
It's an easy read. It only took probably 4 hours in total.
Buy it from Amazon.
