Everything You Wanted is Kele

Kele was pretty darn good at The Creators Project London party last Saturday.

There was an open bar (thanks Intel!) which kept me entertained until he finally took the stage at 1am. Thus, I'm not completely sure if he played "Everything You Wanted". I'm like 70% sure he did. Nevertheless, I like the atmospheric dark mood of his solo album.

It's doubtful that I need more reasons to see Inception, since I've been beyond psyched for this film. Dreams, DiCaprio, action, crumbling buildings and things turn-sideways - what's not to love? Nevertheless, after peeping at another interview from Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page, my internal hype meter ticked up a notch.

Check out the trailer for Ryan Piers Williams film, The Dry Land. It stars Ryan O'Nan, who I swear has been on a few CSI eps that I've seen and America Ferrera, Williams' real-life fiance', which really isn't news because they've been together for like ever. I actually am friends with Ryan from USC. We bonded over a love of film and Texas pride. I haven't seen him in awhile since I've moved to London and his lady's occupation took him to NYC. Nevertheless, I'm pleased as punch to see he's finally done a feature. It won best international feature at EIFF last week and praise at Sundance. The cinematography looks amazing, since Ryan has always been a prodigy with the camera.

Not sure when to expect a wide release in London/LA/NYC etc, but I'm sure it's to be soon. His success makes a teensy bit less resentful of my pricey education at USC Film School. It has proven near worthless for me, but seems to have done wonders for some of my fellow alumni like Ryan and Ace Norton. ;)

In the summertime boredom of days past, I've started sifting the internets for new music. A new gem I came across was from Mount Kimbie.

The James Blake remix is quite melodic with entrancing jagged beats. Dollars to Pounds describes it as "the musical equivalent of an Icelandic volcanic dust cloud". That's certainly spot on.

If my visa continues to screw with my summer holiday plans, I might be checking out these London boys at Field Day Festival. It rained last year making me learn the hard lesson of rainy UK festivals are awful (and only tolerable with copious amounts of alcohol). Still, Phoenix is headlining and it is walking distance from my house. So...

I like the smoky atmosphere and find the tune more disco-licious. Yeah, I made that word up, cos if Beyonce' can do it, so can I. Hats off to Stereogum for putting this on my radar and AdultSwim doing its part to revive music videos on television.

Heartbreaker - A French Delight

I've been patiently awaiting the release of Romain Duris' film, Heartbreaker for months. It's finally coming out this Friday. :)

I like sci-fi, obvious if you know me or read any of this blog or my contributions to TelevisionRevival.com. I am an unapologetic fan when it comes to the genre, except for "Babylon 5", I draw the line there.

'Fringe' filled the hole in my heart left missing by the cancellation of almost every sci-fi show I would get hooked upon. I suppose Fox is making amends to me personally. I was a bit miffed with J.J. and company when the parallel universe story arc emerged. The cruel hand of fate was at work because it mirrored almost exactly my television treatment I worked so hard on during my M.A. last year. But all is forgiven cos the spring season has raised the bar! I cannot wait to see the "Fringe" alternate universe in depth. And from the looks of this promo for the finale, it's worth the wait.

Curses! It's a two-parter. Oh well, I've got "Justified" and other U.S. shows to catch up on in the interim.

I don't know what happened but I've become completely enamored with the Sookie Stackhouse books after writing a paper on the "True Blood" tv show. I only half enjoyed the show and on a whim started reading the books. But once I got to book 2, I was hooked! It reminds me of the black comedy abundant in everyday Southern life, the rampant hypocrisy and superstition. Plus, it has a touch of horror which I've always loved. Oh and reading about hot vamps is okay too.

As for the tv show, first season is a'ight. But second season is 10 times better, altho I could do with less orgies and bleeding heart casseroles. Thus, I'm all in for season three. But I think it's really because of Lafayette that kept my interest piqued. After watching the latest "True Blood" minisode, he's definitely the most enjoyable character (after that is the hot as hell Eric played by Alexander Skarsgard).

In this minisode, Tara gets downright nasty with Sookie, which is fun cos when isn't a verbal catfight not entertaining (see all ANTM cycles). But it's Lafayette coming in to tell them what's what (basically they're trippin'), a smile is brought to my face. On the downside, Anna Paquin, bless her heart, tries to do that southern accent thing but fails miserably. I frown every time I hear it before realizing there's nothing to be done.

Lane Meyer, Cinematic Soulmate

Technically, yes I am a child of the eighties. But that was eons ago when I could barely speak or walk on two legs. Recently I was asked to review a non-auteur film. I wracked my brain and out of sheer love (and laziness), I decided to churn out a small love letter to Better Off Dead (1985).

The film was directed by Savage Steve Holland. It stars John Cusack as Lane Meyer, a Colorado teen pushed to a series of unsuccessful but extremely comic suicide attempts after his perfect girlfriend Beth dumps him. It was originally written as a drama, but when the script was shown to people, they succumbed to fits of laughter. Its deadpan tone and surrealistic animation sequences (especially the hamburger stop-motion sequence) makes this a unique gem from the eighties film vault. I don't care if John Cusack doesn't want to talk about this film; nonetheless, it will make you laugh until you cry. And it has a happy ending, proving true love is out there for everyone, even hapless dreamers that can't ski the K-12.

Here are my faves from the year:

Movies

1. The Dark Knight. I loved it from start to finish. Batman voice and all. The scene where he flips a semi over the Joker is cinematic bliss. The sound design, the cinematography, Heath Ledger's acting, it all just came together. It exceeded my own personal hype and that's saying something.

2. Let the Right One In. This film was amazing. So subtle and engaging. Despite the violence, this was a tender love story of two lost souls coming together.

3. Slumdog Millionare. Just see it, mmmkay.

4. Iron Man. RDJ still has that magic touch. I thought it was gonna be another throwaway comic book movie. Boy was I wrong. It was entertaining from start to finish, even with Gwenyth Paltrow as the female lead.

5. In Bruges. I re-watched this on xmas. Colin Farrell excels in this black comedy. Who knew he could be funny? But the film isn't just about humor, it's about atoning for what you've done and realizing life doesn't end up as planned.

1. "The Wire" - Best crime drama ever!
2. "Doctor Who" - There's a good reason it's the longest running tv series.

1. Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours. They're one of my fave bands, so not too surprising they're my number one pick.

2. Friendly Fires - Friendly Fires. This is my 2008 new music discovery. I'd listened to their cover of "Your Love" for over a year. Then, they got sorta lost in the noise. On a whim, I went to see them open up for The Virgins. Needless to say, I was blown away. These guys have tight, funky and dance-electric set that kept me coming back for more (4x so)!

Key Tracks: "Jump in the Pool", "Paris", and "White Diamonds".

3. The Presets - Apocalypso. More musical genius from down under! My birthday gift to my best friend was tix to their gig at the Glasshouse. After two songs, she was an instant fan. These guys are professional electronic music artists. This album is techno/electro perfection. They pump you up from start to finish. Forget Justice, it's all about these synth heroes.

Key Tracks: "My People", "A New Sky", "Kicking and Screaming"

4. Does it Offend You, Yeah? - You Have No Idea... These fellas got me excited for dance rock again. Remember that first time you heard "Banquet", but had no idea who sung that song, but you were determined to find out. That's how it was with me and DIOYY. And then I heard "Dawn of the Dead". Game, set, match. Fan for life.

Key Tracks: "Dawn of the Dead", "Let's Make Out", "We Are Rockstars"

5. Santogold – Santogold. I waited for this album with baited breath. See this girl in concert and you'll find out quick she's no M.I.A. imitator. She's the real deal. She'll make you her dance slave and be your electronic queen. For real, son.

Key Tracks: "Creator", "L.E.S. Artistes", "You'll Find a Way"

6. M83- Saturdays=Youth. I was always a bit "meh" about M83. Thought it was too instrumental. Saturdays = Youth changed my tune with a quickness. Mr. Gonzales reminds you that singles are good, but albums are better. It's a cohesive blend of gentle, synth melodies and distortion that are searching for memories of days gone by.

Okay, I've talked my fair share of crap about Justice. I'm just sick of LA hipsters going crazy like they've never heard music before when some fake ass dj spins "D.A.N.C.E.". And it's not just me, Jason Bentley agrees has his concerns too.

But at the end of the day, I must admit that I've danced my sweet lil' ass off to what these french dudes spin. I've seen them twice at Coachella (2007 and 2008), at Detour Fest 2007 (where they sucked), and at their first LA show w/ Mstrkrft on Halloween 2006. The guys must have something goin' on, right?

Ironically, only after seeing Ms. Lykke Li in concert did I jump on her hype train. What can I say, I'm skeptical. I remember GWFAS spouting her praises last year, but it just got lost in the noise.

Now I can't make it through the day without listening to "I'm Good, I'm Gone". I even voted for it on stereogum's Gummy Award '08! Perhaps, it's simply I'm in the right place emotionally and otherwise to appreciate this song.

I'm telling ya! These guys are amazing, fantastico, lovely, fun, and simply make some serious dance grooves.

Lykke Li was alright. I liked her stage presence, very Stevie Nicks-esque. I guess I would have enjoyed it more if I was more familiar with her songs.

The Mae Shi were guaranteed fun while Grand Ole Party was a tad mechanical indie rock for me. With a dash of stage banter and bit more charisma, maybe I'd be more interested in Grande Ole Party.

Death Note II

The devil aka Time Warner Cable ruined my "Death Note" recordings of the anime on Adult swim. It would record like 10 minutes of the middle or only one minute of an episode. After awhile,I got too behind in the story. Thus, I missed the first live action Death Note when it was released in theaters last spring. Thanks to the magic of hulu, I can catch up on the anime lickety split before renting the movie from Netflix.

Death Note II: The Last Name will play at select US theaters next week for two days only! October 15th and 16th in select cities.

Does it Offend You Yeah at the Troubadour

Does it Offend You, Yeah played the troubadour on Monday and I was there. It was my 4 time seeing them since April (don't ask).

They were fun and had high energy. Even James, one of the singers, hurt his foot when he got carried away during "With a Heavy Heart". Check my flickr page for a blurry version of events.

But the best part of the night was chilling with Sally and Team Robespierre.

The guitarist jumped into the crowd and played most the set down there. More punk, less synth than DIOYY. If they come to your town, take my advice and check 'em out.

Dragonette was cute but the energy level of the crowd was -2. "I Get Around" was good though. I got there late and have no idea if they played my favorite song, "Boys", the Calvin Harris cover. I'm gonna pretend they didn't...

And then after the show, I got interviewed by You Tell Concerts. Look ma, I'm famous! My interview clip starts at 6:46 mark.

I cannot believe that The Phantom Tollbooth isn't out on DVD.

What is the world coming to?! No, but seriously, it was one of the first live action/animated films. That should count for something. According to wikipedia, it should be out by 2008. Hello? 2008 is half over and no word on a release date. I may just have to sick DVDBeaver on the case (tho they usually track down obscure foreign films and such on various regions).

If I didn't have to work, I'd go see the LACMA screening of it on July 8th. But it's at 1:00pm (I guess for the kids). If you're free, you should really see that movie! It's the jam!

I'll have to console myself with the book until Amazon emails me when it's available. Sad.

Ray Bradbury at Acres of Books

Russian Dolls - Directed by Cedric Klapisch

This movie made my heart melt when I watched it on IFC the other day. It reminded me of the goodtimes I had in London and Barcelona. Plus, the director never hits you over the head with his agenda. He slowly and steadily reveals a true observation about life and love: Stop worrying about how you'll end up or who you'll end up or you'll miss out on all the best parts.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall didn't really need much of an ad strategy to win me over, but it's actually kinda cool. They got a tongue in cheek blog written in the voice of the main character, Peter Bretter. And it is hilarious! I wonder if Jason wrote them himself. Doubtful.

He did on the other hand make the youtube video confessions that are so sad, almost too realistic to watch.

Plus, I love the simplistic billboards with "My mom always hated you, Sarah Marshall". A-wesome! Great writing Jason Segal, and nice producing, Judd.

Tarsem's 'The Fall'

Tarsem Singh, the director of The Cell and REM's "Losing My Religion" has a new movie coming out on May 9th. It's called The Fall and stars Lee Pace, the cute piemaker from "Pushing Daisies".

I saw this amazing movie at the Filter Mag/Hammer Museum party last night. It's beyond beautiful and the little girl, Catinca Untaru, is mesmerizing. I could watch a whole movie of just her asking questions.

Apparently Tarsem thought she was perfect despite the fact she knew little english. So to get her to perform, Tarsem told her (and the rest of the cast and entire crew) that Lee Pace was really in a wheelchair for the first half of shooting. Tarsem has some brass balls to pull off a stunt like that. Of course, he had to come clean, which understandably freaked that poor little girl out for like three days. Luckily, she got over it and had a wonderful time.

The movie took four years to film and was filmed in over 24 countries! Tarsem had the idea for this thing for like 23 years, he said. So overtime he'd collect images of the locales and developed the story. But if he ran out of funding or hired a new actor, he would simple change everything to make it work! Talk about thinking on your feet and having it turn out okay. Thankfully it was all worth it. Now go and see this movie so he doesn't have to sell his house to finance his next film.

Please let the tv show bubble report by TV Guide be wrong about "New Amsterdam". The show is getting better each episode and the main star, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, is H-O-T!

I agree with the rest of the predictions, but maybe Ausiello is right? New Amsterdam was pushed into a mid-season premiere, so it started out in the hot seat. Plus, this is Fox we're talking about... Hopefully the Hulu full episode traffic stats will convince Fox to give it another chance. Fingers crossed.

Lupe Fiasco headlined USC's Springfest this year. Despite him being an hour late and being quite chatty in between songs, it was fun. He ended the set with a long version "Superstar". My new favorite track though is "Dumb it Down". And I'm pretty sure the original girl singing on "Hip Hop Saved My Life" was with him on stage. He had some nice energy, even skateboarded whilst singing "Kick Push".

Another reason, amongst many, why I love Pajiba!

Thanks for making me feel okay to be a geek. "Farscape" is the best sci-fi show I’ve seen in the last 20 years hands down. "FireFly" and those Whedon worshippers can go suck it. Even Empire Magazine recognizes Farscape's greatness!

I do have to admit that "Farscape" was lucky to have the four seasons that it got. Nevertheless, I was devastated when it was cancelled. I even boycotted Battlestar Galactica (kinda still am) because it had a hand in Farscape’s cancellation. At least, SciFi softened the cancellation blow with a mini-series wrap up ("The Peacekeeper Wars").

And if you check the comments, looks like Ben Browder landed on his feet okay (despite Stargate SG1 also being cancelled) and is producing a new show for SciFi channel!

In honor of Michel Gondry's new flick, Be Kind, Rewind, Filmmaking Frenzy held a contest for parody/remakes. The best one so far is The Thing by Team Syracused. They've got flames going, fake blood, even a severed head prop!

Beware though, it's very hit or miss, especially the ones starring people in their mid forties. For example, this Lebowski one is okay, but another one I saw was just crap made by some nerds.

And if you have a place in your heart for David Bowie, you owe it to yourself to watch the Labyrinth parody.

I've always been mildly interested in comics, but never pursued it. Whitney (Pop Candy) talks about comics from time to time, which perked my interest in Y: The Last Man series.

But I feel like such a novice and have no idea where to start that I just put it off. Luckily, Pop Candy's crash course in comics (part one of four) made me realize that I'm missing out on a huge literary genre. She claims to only gotten into comics in her late twenties, so it's not too late, right?

Batman looks like a good place to start. I do own the animated series on VHS.

RIP: Evan Farrell of Rogue Wave Fame

I can't believe I just heard about this tragedy today during lunch. I unknowingly wore my Rogue Wave t-shirt to work, which shortly led to someone telling me this sad news.

Evan Farrell, ex-bassist for Rogue Wave, passed away on December 23rd. He suffered severe burns from a house fire in Oakland, where the band is based. He hasn't been with the band since 'Descended Like Vultures' (which is a great album!), but he is certainly still part of that musical family. The SF Weekly tribute tells the story of Evan's greatness the best.

And just last week, I re-discovered the awesomeness of Rogue Wave, shamefully from that trippy Zune commercial. Rogue Wave's "Lake Michigan" scores the ad. Zunes are pieces of crap, but you gotta give Microsoft props for at least picking an excellent song to peddle their product. It's so melodic and simply takes you in. It really is one of the best songs I've heard in months. Don't believe me, check out their music video and the Zune commercial below.

Lily Allen has been infected by the new fad of pregnancy!

I had no idea that she's was dating Ed Simons of Chemical Brothers. But hey, they sound happy, so whatever. This doesn't make me as sad like Jamie Lynn Spears, who at the tender age of 16 will be modeling maternity wear as well.

But seriously, what the hell is with all the celebrities getting knocked up (Nicole Richie, Bridget Moynahan, Jessica Alba, Katie Holmes)? Why oh why do you want to give your selfish lives up so early? Don't you know what happens when you try to party and be a mom (see example: Britney Spears)? You look like a selfish skank or at the very least your career goes downhill a bit.

Plus, you get fat!!

If I had the funds to do what I wanted, the first thing on my list would definitely NOT be getting preggers. Call me crazy, but aren't children an expensive committment? Like, you want to give your whole life over to them? I want to be able to use my time to make some of my dreams and goals come to fruition before having a new little person's. There might (probably won't though) be a time when I'd be ready. But I would never throw caution to the wind (or is it to love?) and allow myself to have a child before I'm ready.

LAist kindly put in their news feed a online debate from on Pandagon about the state of black women's hair. It's about the age old natural vs. relaxer/straight hair look. The blog's description of the choices of black hair options are quite apt, but to lay it on as only "straight" hair is professional is much too far of a stretch. Settle the fuck down, y'all, and just rag on Essence for simply putting together a bad top 10. And the first mistake was to even take that publication seriously!

Ironically, this past saturday, I had to suffer the hot comb because my hair couldn't take a relaxer at this point time (i.e. chemicals are some harsh shit). I was indeed "praying" that comb wouldn't burn the fuck outta scalp just as Pandagon laments.

And it is true that most of Essence's choices are a ton of people with weaves and shit. But hold back if you think I'm folding for the white man by relaxing my hair. I don't have the time to go natural, perhaps I would if I had a team of stylists to support me. But since that shit ain't happen soon, I usually relax the shit to get it over with. I wants my hair to be straight because it moves more and doesn't look unkempt! And all women, of all races, spend way too fucking much on hair and beauty, which also isn't a new notion.

TTC rocked da house!

TTC, legendary hip-hop/electro/dance act from Paris, showed LA how to party last wednesday. Don't believe me? Check this video of them throwing the freshness on some Ace of Base. I danced my fill to all their songs (despite not knowing a lick of French).

Teki was the main MC who translated for us stupid Americans. He introduced the last song, "Hi guys, this is my pop song!". Cue the cheesy french pop ala' Kylie with a dash of Aqua. Teki & Co had a whole dance routine and everything. It was just a massive party of french men on stage. They all loved our enthusiasm, despite all the stupid girls in the audience who didn't know who the hell they were.

Then, they put away their microphones and started the real dance party. DJ Orgasmic, Para One, and Tacteel tag teamed on the decks. Most the crowd wasn't down for it, since it was quite late. But my crew simply welcomed the extra dancing room and went to town. I knew Para One was master of electro beats, but I was quite impressed with what Tacteel threw down.

At the end of the night, I thanked Teki for the show. Now he knows at least a few Los Angelenos love TTC.

I love Harry Potter and shit but damn is that a bit inflated. They had expected to only get 100K, guess they severely underestimated Pottermaniacs. Actually, it was Amazon.com who took the prize off Sotheby's hands. They plan to tour the book around libraries, which I suppose is slightly admirable. Now regular folks might take a peek at it, instead of it collecting dust in some fanatic's house.

Say what? Laist thinks electronic music in LA is on an upswing? Well, yeah. But damn, that shit never left, it just got more mainstream (i.e. Justice selling out the Fonda).

I can even pinpoint when that shit started to take off: Halloween 2006 . I prepared in advance and got tix to MSTRKRFT/Justice in advance for the show at Safari Sam's. It took some persuading but I rounded up my posse the day of the show, and we lined up early so they could buy tickets. Two hours later and a lot of hassle: only Margo and I managed to get inside. WTF? I had been to many chicago house, sketchy warehouse events in the past. And there was never a time when we were turned away. Most electronic shows need as many people as they can get.

But not that night. It was unreal in there. I had no idea that many people even knew who these djs were. And granted, many of them didn't (silly hipster trash). Or if they did, they only heard of MSTRKRFT cause of DFA 1979. But for the real electro-heads and dance junkies, we knew this shit was gonna be off the hook. And indeed it was.

As time went on, I did find myself going to more and more dance shows. I saw Lo-Fi-Fnk, Para One, Acid Girls, Green Velvet, and so many others. This was mostly due to the fact Franki Chan declared it his mission to entice these djs and dance groups to his Check yo ponytail night. I may not like the crowd, but that club night still pays off more nights than most. And that shit is still going strong. Check the pictures from the SMD/Boys Noize night for photographic proof.

The Justice show at the Fonda was just the climax of the growing hipster dance scene. After marveling at the sheer numbers of kids, I mean, people waiting for Justice to start at Detour, I reckon we're gonna see a backlash soon. I know they played Jimmy Kimmel, which I think was weird, but really a big deal. Perhaps, my favorite Parisian duo are selling out too quickly for my tastes. I became a huge fan of them after Coachella, but with all the commericials using their songs and other articles like the one on LAist, I'm starting to get worried.

In regards to the scene, I feel like it's too much all at once. People are gonna get tired, which was evident at Check yo afterparty for Detour Fest. It was deeeeaaaad in that place! Space that shit out, let a girl get a breath in. I feel like everyone and their brother are trying to run their own club/dance night/warehouse party. And some of that stuff is gonna suck eventually. There's a ton of fake ass djs (in the words of Paris), and if they don't clear out, the scene is gonna suffer.

This ain't truth, just wanted to put my two cents in, since I've gone to a shit ton of shows in the last year.

Hopefully by this time tomorrow, I will be very close to Vegas (if the fires don't slow me down). Since I have never gambled (gasp!), I will get that out of my system on Friday night.

The main event is on Saturday when I get see what this Vegoose Festival is all about. The acts that I am most curious about are Battles, Queens of the Stone Age, and Gogol Bordello. I've heard alot of hype, but missed them whenever they were in LA. Want to see these bands in the flesh. I'm sure QOTSA will be good, not so sure about the others though. But Gypsy-punk just has to be entertaining.

After that, I wanna check out MIA again. The show in July was good, but short. I hear that her live sets leave much to be desired. Nevertheless, "Bamboo Banga" is the shit, and I plan on being in the front for that track!

Daft Punk won't disappoint, so I'm only mildy excited. They're robots who know how to get your feet movin'.

Fingers crossed that I get drunk and have fun without loosing my shirt at the casinos.

You know who's so fucking rad? The Go! Team that's who!

Sunday's show at the Echoplex was amazing. The atmosphere was perfect: full of high energy, dancing, and good sound quality. They played all the hits and then some.

And boy could Ninja move her feet. Sadly, cause I'm a shorty, I couldn't take in all of her fancy footwork. Nevertheless, she had the crowd in the palm of her hands. So much so, I wanted to shout out: "Damn girl, don't hurt 'em". She asked the crowd for a favor: to get up and dance. And the entire Echoplex humbly obliged.

I always appreciated their tunes, but now I love them. One of the best shows of the fall! Now I understand the look of shock my friend Brian gave me when I said I missed the Go! Team at Coachella 2006. Don't make the same mistake, see them as many times as you possibly can. You won't regret it.

New Bloc Party track called "Flux". The blogger hipster collective don't seem all that into it if you look at the banter on stereogum.

I like the radio edit I heard on GWFAS. I do have to admit that it's gotta alot more synths than what I caught on Conan. It's not a serious use of a vocoder ala Chromeo (or Cher as people are claiming), but it's alright. I give the boys a 6 out of 10, meaning slightly above average.

Can we get another full-length album soon? Pretty please? I'm gonna be over all their songs after Detour Fest tomorrow, for sho.

I stumbled across this awesome site called Apartment Therapy. I was drawn in by this feature on how this guy, Victor, in Chi-town "blikked out" his office.

What's "blik" I quickly asked myself? Come to find out, it's this sweet ass surface graphics company called Blik! You can buy stickers for your car, wall, vases, glasses, and so on and so forth. I especially liked the bird pattern and the new Prose decals.

I love how The Onion made sure to point out that JT was a bit behind the times when shouting at the VMAs that they should play more videos.

Hey JT, MTV would come back with some retort like "that's why we created MTV2, MTV Hits, jerk-off", which is absolute BS. I remember that more times than not M2 had a fucking episode of Wild N'Out or something on instead of videos!

And the article goes on to explain how MTV is continuing to drive normal people insane with a look at their new fall programming.

Uhura wasn't that light

Zoe Saldana as Uhura? Come the fuck on?!

Did they pick Zoe simply because she's happens to be African-American and is semi-known? Ok, she is beautiful, but she doesn't seem to have enough charisma. In most of her roles, she comes off as kinda bland.

Sylar at least has some some personality, a bit of depth, so Zachary Quinto as Spock sorta makes sense.

After the travesty of 'Nemesis', JJ Abrams is gonna have tons of doubt and nay-saying from the audience. My advice (not that he's asking) is to tread lightly with casting. I guess the producers think all the "Lost" fans will see the Trek movie, simply because he's directing. I think not, it will be the die-hard Trekkies and sci-fi fans, if they're lucky.

New Cut Copy on the horizon

Cut Copy expect to finish their album by the end of this year, so as to have an international release in 2008! Forget Kanye, this is the album I've been waiting on for a looooong time. Tim Goldsworthy, the legendary DFA producer, is the perfect choice for their sophmore album.

'Bright Like Neon Love' is definitely on permanent rotation on the ipod, but it's always good to have new music once in awhile. If you don't own their debut album, you are missing out. I listened to the whole thing on repeat whilst driving (very hungover) to San Diego on Sunday. It was perfect score for a daytrip down south.

John Cusack gave a very candid interview to the Guardian this week. His honesty only makes me love that guy more. He actually admitted that he makes crap romantic comedies. He goes as far to say that he's only made ten good films, and most people know which ones those are.

And yet, the interview made me more curious to learn about him. He does keep his personal life relatively in the dark. Cusack explains his reasoning behind this: "It seems like common sense to me. When I was growing up, I never wanted to know what my favourite musicians or artists ate for breakfast, or who they were dating. I found out what they felt about the world from their work."

Isn't he just wonderful? I have own pretty much all of his movies (bad and the good). It's sorta a hobby of mine. But I will be the first to say, 'Must Love Dogs', was just horrid. That is one that I have held off on buying.

Yahoo News seems to think so. Apparently, the music industry has finally recognized the power of the internet. There are more lo-fi music videos in circulation, cuz record labels are willing to pay for videos that will most likely be seen on a laptop for free.

Youtube has made the music video virtually only available online. I can't say the last time I've seen a decent video on the so-called MTV Hits channel. And regular MTV, forgettaboutit. I usually have my friends crowd around the computer as we jam to this new video I saw on Stereogum or what not. I guess the big wigs in the record industry found that people like quality over quantity. But y'know what, all those crunk/hip-hop videos keep churning out like water, so maybe its just cheaper is better.

Apple cut the price of the iPhone by $200 bucks on Wednesday. I won't say I told you so to those idiots who just had to buy it in June. But seriously, this is how Apple does, you should just know better and quit whining. And hey, it looks like you might even be eligible for a credit. Hope you kept your receipt.

I'm quite happy with my Sony Walkman phone. I grooved to some Justice at a bus stop in SF, much to the chagrin of the people around me. But that baby's got a decent speaker, and I can still upload any mp3 as my ringtone. I guess when it dies, as these pieces of technology do, I'm sure to upgrade to an iphone for sure. They are kinda freakin' sweet. Thanks for the price cut, Steve.

Klaxons beat out Winehouse

I may be a bit weary of hearing about them, but in the end, they deliver the goods in concert. I can't say the same for Mrs. Winehouse-Fielder-Civil.

And it seems she's been engaged to the director, Paul W.S. Anderson since Resident Evil came out. Now, it all makes sense. Plus, it's not like she hasn't married one of her other directors, Luc Besson, before. But see, Luc's talented, so that was okay in my mind. Paul's not a hack, since I do own some of his movies (*hangs head in shame), but he's still not that good either.

Guess he must be doing something right to bed and impregrenate a top model/singer/actress like her. I don't know why it suprises me. This is old hat for the entertainment industry. Tons of directors marry their actresses/muse... Spielberg, James Cameron, Rachel Weisz and Darren Aronofsky even.

I just thought maybe Milla had a few crazy suprises left for me...maybe record another album. Nope, just another Resident Evil movie. Check the trailer for Resident Evil: Extinction. I hate to say it looks kinda fun. I see myself going drunk to the theater and enjoying the hell out of it.

I just read on PopCandy that "The Dresden Files" got cancelled! Noooooo! Another good sci-fi show bites the dust. Whenever I see a decent show, I always forget that tv execs see the exact opposite.

And I was just thinking about the show after spotting Valerie Cruz, who plays Detective Murphy, at World Market last week. She was just hanging around looking at jewelry, when I saw her. I thought to myself, "Hey there goes Murphy! She shops too." She seems very nice. I simply asked her if she needed any help, and she politely said she was all good.

I descended into a deep depression this morning since I heard of the cancellation. I scoured SciFi.com for any official confirmation, to no avail. And I discovered that Mr. Dresden himself is a Briton! Are all actors these day from the UK? Paul Blackthorne (Dresden) is even an accomplished photographer. So naturally, since he's so dashing and talented, he's already got a spot on the new show "Big Shots" on ABC. I guess I'll just have to console myself his new role.

His chemistry with Bob was the best part of the show, and now it's gone. And somehow "Charmed" was on for like five or six seasons? The comraderie between the sisters (and half sisters) left alot to be desired. Oh well, that's television for ya. Can't keep a good thing for very long.

I feel like I've been waiting forever for "The Two Coreys" to premiere! On July 29th, I'll finally have my dreams realized!

I wonder how many eps it will take before we get the truth behind why Haim sold his teeth on ebay... Now that's an advertisement for the wonders of ebay, if I ever saw one.

Actually, it's been so long I almost forgot the show was even coming out. But a late night stop to Fatburger reminded me. LNDSML and me were just recovering from the Spoon secret show at Little Radio.

So we're buzzed on Dewars, to say the least, we're in a dancey mood. We drift over to the jukebox, which can't stop playing the latest song by T-pain (boo!). I attempt to change the song and find ads for the tv show starring America's favorite Coreys plastered all over the menu. They even had a 5 question quiz, which I scored a 4 outta 5. I was drunk, and it took me a minute to realize that the Haim-ster was the Canadian one!

Feeling somewhat vindicated with my score, I go home (food in hand, of course) to watch some Venture Bros and pass out. Too bad, License to Drive wasn't on, then I woulda been glued to the tube.

It may be from lack of sleep or the fact that I drank a Trader Joe's energy drink just before entering the theater, but I fucking loved Transformers!

Granted, the script was terrible. Some of that dialogue was simply awful, "there's more to you than meets the eye" as a pickup line. Sheesh. And that girl, Megan Fox, can't act for shit. What was with the end with them kissing on top of Bumblebee? Isn't that weird to make out on top of your so-called friend/robot?

Nevertheless this movie seriously entertained me. Megatron was quite the firecracker when he awoke from his slumber. And as always Optimus was my favorite. I missed some of the final showdown when i was forced to slip out to the bathroom (damn energy drinks, like a double-edged sword). I still saw all the important parts.

I think I was just in the mood for some mindless fun, and this movie really did the trick. Michael Bay actually didn't piss all over my fond memories of the cartoon. I see them as two different entities, since these robots are so high tech from the outset. Shia makes box office gold once again! Damn is that a lucky ass kid.

Sunshine is finally coming out in the US next Friday, July 20th! I'm so psyched about this movie. It looks dark, intelligent, and thrilling. And it doesn't hurt that it's directed by one of my favorite directors. Plus, Cillian Murphy is pretty easy on the eyes. I'm easy like that.

God do I miss the wacky days of the eighties and nineties. I was just jammin to some Candlebox in the car. Kinda makes me miss the carefree days of junior high when I had no real discerning taste (along with the rest of America). It actually looks pretty awesome. The animation is crisp and innovative. I'm not the biggest fan of the show, nor do i hate it by any means. I just don't own it or ever watch it on my own time. I'm usually stuck at someone's house killing time or doing illicit substances. I just go where the day takes me.

So far, "Bones" is still my favorite. I saw them perform it at their Tower Records in-store. It was really awesome, really full of energy. Not sure if the new album lives up, but I'll be buying it nonetheless. RS didn't give it a good review, basically the same MO as with Bloc Party's cd. I dunno what's with these art punk bands slowing things down when they should be speeding things up. I'll just have to hope for more upbeat songs on the next go 'round.

Speaking of Tower, I really miss Tower Records. I never really appreciated it until it was gone. The one down the road from me is housing the White Stripes mini-concert that their webcasting today. They're changing the name to Icky Thump Records to tie it all in to the release. Perhaps, I'll try and sneak a peak later on tonight. I bet people are lining up already.

Connery to stay retired

Sean Connery decided not to break his retirement for the next Indiana Jones movie. He said it's just too damn fun doing nothing all day. I agree wholeheartedly, Mr. Connery. I'm wishing I was retired already and I'm only 25! That lucky bastard.

I thought this movie might of had a chance if Sean Connery returned. Plus, with casting the Shia, it seemed destined for box office gold! They just added John Hurt, who I love, but no word on which character he'll play. I'm sure they'll just write in Indy's dad as deceased. And that will be that. If they don't, the movie will be doomed.

Indiana Jones 4 is scheduled for release May '08.

My Johnny boy made a movie with Samuel L Jackson called 1408? This is great fucking news! And it's based on a Stephen King story. The trailer actually got me a tad excited.

I have no idea who this director, Mikael Hafstrom, but if he convinced John and Sam, then I'm in. I'm sure it won't be awesome, but possibly decent. Can't be as bad as Identity. I do have pretty low standards when the Cusack is involved.

1408 hits theaters on June 22nd.

Confession of the week

I am addicted to my "Silk Stalkings" season 2 dvd.

It's simply fantastic. If you can't find humor in this show, I don't want to know you. It's seriously hilarious.

The best writing I've seen yet was in this scene with a rogue female cop in episode two. She has these high waisted jeans, which were tight as all get out. She tries to justify why she's taken up with her drug dealing, murdering boyfriend, Johnny (mind you who has just murdered her partner). "[Johnny's] like a drug...like a needle in my arm!" That's just golden.
